Renault’s FeliZiudad project, a sustainable community initiative promoting sustainability and happiness in neighbourhoods, has received the endorsement of EIT InnoEnergy.

EIT InnoEnergy, the EU’s innovation arm supporting sustainable energy, has signed a partnership agreement with Renault formally endorsing the sustainable community initiative. FeliZiudad was launched on World Happiness Day 2019, with the aim of improving the quality of life of urban residents across Spain; the FeliZiudad platform has so far seen more than 35 initiatives registered in Aragon, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Galicia and Madrid, among other regions. Initiatives already registered under the scheme include Biciclot, a cycling co-operative which teaches users about bicycle maintenance and repair while refurbishing old and secondhand bicycles; and a community garden aimed at promoting social cohesion and knowledge sharing between generations.

Jesus Presa, Director of Communication at Renault Iberia, said: “We are delighted to collaborate with EIT InnoEnergy, partner, independent leader in sustainable energy innovation in Europe, solid, reliable and internationally renowned, to develop this pioneering idea in our country, within the great project FeliZiudad.”

The endorsement scheme will see EIT InnoEnergy assess projects which are registered under the FeliZiudad sustainable community initiative with reference to four ‘pillars’: energy and buildings; habitability and public spaces; sustainable mobility; and social cohesion. Neighbourhoods whose projects receive the EIT InnoEnergy endorsement will be permitted to use a special logo, similar to the Blue Flag coastline programme; with the aim of drawing in tourism and celebrating sustainability in communities. Endorsements will be initially piloted in five neighbourhoods, before a nationwide rollout across Spain later this year.

Mikel Lasa, CEO of EIT InnoEnergy Iberia, said: “Collaborating in such an ambitious project with Renault, a leading company worldwide, gives us the opportunity to expand our mission of sustainability throughout society and thus contribute to a better quality of life of the citizen.”
