Theoretical Studies at Clark Atlanta University

Center for Theoretical Studies of Physical Systems at Clark Atlanta University expanded its collaborations and partnerships through the participation in the International Laboratory “Fermion Condensation”

Center for Theoretical Studies of Physical Systems (CTSPS) at Clark Atlanta University (CAU) was established in 1991 through a multi-million dollar research grant from National Science Foundation. CTSPS’ major objective is to carry out forefront research through dynamic clustering of researchers in the areas of Atomic and Molecular Theory, Condensed Matter/Materials Theory, Mathematical Physics/Applied Mathematics etc. and elevate CAU’s research capacity.

The formation of world-wide extensive research partnerships and collaborations to conduct forefront research at CAU established a mechanism for educating and producing African American M.S. and Ph.D. students in STEM fields.

The research strength gained through the collaborations and partnerships allowed CTSPS to focus resources on Africa to impact research and human resource development.

Very recently, CTSPS expanded its collaborations and partnerships through the participation in the International Laboratory “Fermion Condensation”.  This collaboration and with iThemba Labs in Cape Town, South Africa has led to the fundamental theoretical understanding of both strongly correlated Fermi systems and negative ion formation in complex heavy systems for the first time.

Alfred Msezane, Ph. D. is a Professor of Physics and Founding Director of CTSPS, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (London, UK), Institute of Physics (London, UK), American Physical Society and Life Member, National Society of Black Physicists, and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
