Toshihiro Okamoto: pioneering organic semiconductor research

Toshihiro Okamoto received his PhD in 2003 from Osaka City University’s Molecular Materials Science Division, under the guidance of Professor Keiji Okada. He was appointed a Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and a Special Postdoctoral (SPD) Researcher at Nagoya University in Japan in 2003.

In 2005, he was appointed to a postdoctoral research post at Stanford University, USA. He joined RIKEN, Japan, as a researcher in 2007; before becoming a project assistant professor at the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 2009 and project associate professor at the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (ISIR), Osaka University, Japan in 2010.

In 2012, he was appointed Associate Professor at the ISIR, Osaka University and the University of Tokyo, where he carries out his current work.

Since 2013 he has also worked as a researcher on a number of Japan Science and Technology Agency – Precursory Research for Embryonic Science and Technology (JST-PRESTO) programmes, including ‘Molecular Technology and Creation of New Functions’ (number JPMJPR13K5) and ‘Scientific Innovation for Energy Harvesting Technology’ (number JPMJPR17R2); and as of 2017 he has held a research post in Scientific Innovation for Energy Harvesting Technology at the Japan Science and Technology Agency.

Okamoto’s specialist research fields include:

• The development of organic semiconducting materials, such as those commonly used in optoelectronic devices; and
• The development of new organic semiconductors based around bent-shaped π-electron cores, meeting a series of prerequisites for use with printed and flexible electronics.
In 2014 Okamoto was awarded the Society of Polymer Science, Japan’s SPSJ Hitachi Chemical Award.
